Monday

Monday morning the students worked in groups. After lunch students visited the fly eye lab and heard from Steven Barrett. They got to see one of the graduate students working on a fly in the lab as well as some of the sensors that they have built as a result of their research.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

Wednesday morning students worked in groups. After lunch Michael Pernice talked about the work going on at Idaho National Lab and answered some good questions about the work.

Thursday morning students worked in groups. At 2:00 the students presented their work and progress. Next week will be the final presentations and they will have to lay out their progress for a more broad audience.

Friday morning we left for Golden Colorado at 7:15. We made it to the NREL (National Renewable Energy Lab) by 10:00 and were given an idea of some of the advances being made at the lab. We then went to Colorado Mills for lunch and also indoor black light mini golf! After mini golf we proceeded to the NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research). Students were given the opportunity to walk around the exhibits in the public portion of NCAR and also hike in the flatirons if they wanted. Some stayed behind and hopefully had some fun in Boulder.

Monday and Tuesday Week 7

Hello all I'm back from the conference in Iowa. On Monday students worked in their groups. On Tuesday morning the students kept working in groups. After lunch on Tuesday some of the students attended Mike Presho's dissertation defense, they got to see what is expected from your defense public presentation. After the opportunity for questions the public was asked to leave and the committee met with Mike alone. Students then continued to work on their projects.

Wednesday

Wednesday morning students worked in groups. After lunch Farhad Jafari presented the students with an introduction to Complex Analysis in several variables. Farhad spent some time reminding/ teaching the students about Complex Analysis in a single variable. He gave them a good foundation for their next encounter with this subject.

Monday and Tuesday

Monday students worked on their respective projects in groups.

Tuesday morning students continued working. After lunch Charlie Angevine gave the students some practice GRE problems from Calculus III. Charlie worked through the problems on the board and reminded the students of some of the techniques that were used in Calculus III.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

Wednesday morning students attended the RMMC or worked in their groups. After lunch Dave Meyer talked about his research in engineering control theory.

Thursday morning students attended the RMMC or worked in their groups. After lunch students gave presentations about their current research positions. It sounds like you are all making good progress and we look forward to some great results in the near future.

Friday students attended the RMMC and worked in their groups all day. Have a wonderful 4th of July weekend everyone!

This morning students went to the RMMC and met in their groups. After lunch students met with Beth Buskirk, Bryan Shader, Michael Stoellinger and Colin Garnett about applying for graduate school. Students then worked in groups. Tuesday evening some of the students went out to Taco Tuesday at Corona Village, good fun times! We're looking forward to hearing reports on progress Thursday!

Monday

This morning students worked in groups or attended the RMMC. After lunch students met with some of the professors involved with the RMMC. They discussed graduate school and research. After the meeting students worked in their groups.

Friday

Friday Morning students worked in their groups. After lunch Peter Lax gave a lecture for the RMMC. After the talk Colin gave an introduction to the beamer package for LaTeX which thankfully for the students was short, but hopefully informative. Have a great Weekend!

Wednesday and Thursday

Wednesday students worked in their groups and have made some good progress. Thursday students worked in groups in the morning. After lunch Blake Temple gave two lectures for the RMMC and students were encouraged to attend.

Tuesday

Tuesday morning the RMMC started with lectures by the two main speakers, first H.K. Jenssen followed by J. Rossmanith. After lunch students worked in their groups. At 2:00 Eric Moorhouse gave a presentation about giving a math talk. I will email the notes from his talk to you if you would like them. The students then went back to their groups to work some more.

Monday

This morning students worked in their groups. After lunch Bryan Shader met with the students and gave them an idea of what the schedule is for the next two weeks. He also had a video about how to write mathematics badly, which didn't work due to technical difficulties, he has sent the link out in an email for the students. The next two weeks will be mostly the RMMC for the students and some talks in the afternoons.

Thursday and Friday

Thursday morning students gave 20 minute presentations about their research. Each went well and any specific comments will be given by the faculty to each group. After lunch Myron Allen gave a talk about writing mathematics. It will be important that you keep these tips in mind when you are writing up your projects for the summer.

Friday morning students met in groups. After lunch Mike Bostick came in and gave an introduction the Math subject GRE. I was unable to attend, but heard that it went well! We will be giving three more presentations about the Math subject GRE, one for each of the major topics on the exam. Be on the look out for the presentation on Calculus given by Charlie Angevine.
