Tuesday morning students worked in groups. After lunch David Anton gave an introduction to LaTeX, any specific questions that come up can be addressed to David, Colin, or your faculty adviser/ graduate student adviser. The students then went to a presentation by Guo Qingping.
Wednesday morning students worked in groups. We met with the Chemistry REU for the final ethics in science luncheon. Students were then given instructions about how to register and fill out information for CITI so that we will be in compliance with NSF guidelines. Please complete this course as soon as possible. After lunch groups met again and prepared for the presentation on Thursday.

Monday
Monday morning students worked with their groups. After lunch students had the opportunity to meet some of the graduate students in the department. We talked about the pros and cons of our own graduate school experiences, no professors were present and so hopefully students got a good feeling for the truth of graduate school. For the REU students, if there are any questions that you did not get answered or think of later let me know and we will address these questions when we meet with Beth Buskirk and the graduate students again.
After the meeting with graduate students we adjourned and students got back to their projects.

Friday and the weekend
All of Friday, students met with their groups and worked with Long and Victor on their projects. We can't wait to see what they have come up with during their Thursday presentations.
On Saturday we made an unsuccessful attempt at hiking at Vedauwoo, the rain was too much for us. We ended up going bowling and playing pool instead. On Sunday Bryan and Chanyoung invited students and all those involved with the REU over for a barbecue which I trust was successful.

Thursday morning students were given an introduction to each of the three projects and given the opportunity to select which of the three they preferred. It turned out that the students split directly into two groups each with four students, so there will be two projects this year.
After lunch the students split into their groups and started on the projects. At 4:00 Ye Zhang from the geology department came in and gave a lecture about Upscaling & Model Complexity in Subsurface Flow, this helped to show the importance of a good model in real world applications.

Tuesday and Wednesday
Tuesday morning Long Lee gave a more in depth look at Partial Differential Equations and how they will be used in the projects. After lunch Harish Gopalan gave an introduction to the cluster and how to access the cluster. Long Lee followed this by an introduction to CLAWPACK (Conservation Law Package) for calculating the solution to PDEs. Long then went on to talk about renormalization groups and the application to PDEs.
Wednesday morning Victor Ginting talked about a more theoretical approach to PDEs with the finite element method. The students then went to lunch with the Chemistry REU. Bryan Shader and John Hoberg acted out a scenario and students were given the opportunity to participate in a mock PhD oral exam. After lunch Victor continued his presentation with an introduction to Matlab and more about the Finite element method. At 4:00 students visited Mohammad Piri's lab in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering. Mohammad Piri injects various fluids (oil, gas, water, etc...) into various rock samples and maps the result of injection using a CT scan. This lab is the only of its kind in the world and it was a treat to visit such a well designed, well run lab.
